The Potential of Digital Video
Students today live in a multimedia world and appreciate variety in their learning environment. Videos can create a very stimulating environment for the learner. It has the ability to provide a unique learning experience, one which will engage the student in ways beyond traditional textbook and lecture. The use of video as part of a lesson plan help students understand concepts and retain information, but it also has the effect of increasing the students’ enthusiasm about the information presented to them and causes them to become more motivated to learn. Scientific research has demonstrated that the use of video in the classroom improves learning, retention and test scores. According to Lightbody (p.1, 2004) ‘students find video motivational and enjoy greater control over their own learning (it is easy to start, stop or replay video segments)’.

Benefits for pupils

Through working with digital video pupils can:

  • express their ideas
  • engage in depth with a narrative or other piece of content
  • develop their understanding of a sequence of events
  • monitor and measure physical phenomena
  • reflect on their learning

Benefits for teachers
Digital video provides teachers with stimulating material that can be used by individuals, groups or the whole class by using display technologies such as a digital projector or an interactive whiteboard.
Through working with digital video teachers can:

  • illustrate concepts and physical phenomena through a visual medium, allowing questioning, explaining and modelling with the whole class or groups
  • encourage talk as a tool for thinking and learning, allowing pupils to engage in exploratory
  • talk or reasoning as they are engaged in collaborative activities
  • encourage pupils to reflect, allowing time in the plenary session to review pupils’ work so they can contemplate what they have learned.

The Internet in Education

This assignment entailed building and posting information on a website and creating a blog.

The website I constructed can be accessed at http://corinth.edu.tt. This web site was constructed using Microsoft Office Front page and was built using frames.

This website was designed to share information with my students. Besides the page which contains my profile, the other pages contain three assignments that my students at the training college will be asked to do.

Websites which are accessed via the Internet can be a valuable tool in education today. For example when we connect our schools to the internet, we are connecting to more information sources than we ever thought possible. We can access many major university libraries and research archives that are made available by governments and universities around the world. The information on the internet can be historical, or up to the minute

Students can use the internet as another resource for information, just as they use the library resources and periodicals now. When using the internet, however, they will always have access to the information.

Blogs
My blog can be accessed at the following site:http://ctcol.blogspot.com The name of the blog is “Educational Technology”. The focus of this blog is to discuss the uses of various technology in education. To make the blog more user-friendly I added a photograph of myself. I believe that fellow bloggers will feel more comfortable exchanging ideas if they can associate a face with the blog.
Weblogs are a great communications tool and they are also a great way to organize information. From a teaching standpoint, they can be used as online classroom portals, discussion sites, filing cabinets for handouts and syllabi, collaboration spaces and personal portfolios. I think the easiest place to start is to use the Weblog as a homepage for a class to post homework assignments, links, discussion questions, etc. Weblogs can also be a valuable tool for the reflective practitioner.
In the case of students I think that the most obvious uses for Web logs are as online filing cabinets and/or portfolios. A Weblog is a great tool for students to organize their work and to reflect on their progress. A Weblog can be an archived record of effort and learning that students can build upon from year to year. Other uses include collaborative work space, online journal or reader response type work and research journal.

The use of computer technology is expanding rapidly throughout all levels of the education system. However, as with any new technology that is introduced and used, those administering the knowledge especially in the primary schools must be competent and well equipped to not only pass on relevant information but also be critical thinkers of the use of the technology in other areas and its long term benefits and challenges.

This is where students who may be a bit shy in the classroom can voice there thoughts and opinions on concepts to the teacher using electronic mail. Microsoft Excel increases the productivity of the teacher. Using this package the teacher can keep proper records of attendance, students' performance and can also predict changes as long as proper formulas are used. Teachers can also provide effective feedback to parents on their child's performance since marks/grades can be orderly laid out using excel. Inconsistencies can further more be highlighted and remedied.

It allows us as future teachers to work co-operatively in groups and devise strategies that would be implemented to enhance teacher’s instruction and track students’ performance. It depicts a very “real” problem solving situation that exist in our schools today. When I resume teaching, I’d like to be on a committee for a project of this nature.

Helpful Hint: PowerPoint

When you insert an auto shape over text in a textbox in PowerPoint, it usually comes up colored.
In class, these steps were used: Format, Auto Shape, Transparency (increased) for the text
to show.
Another alternative is that you can firstly select your Auto shape, use Draw(usually at the bottom left hand corner of the screen) (View Toolbars –Drawing
if it’s not present), Order, Send behind Text/Send backward/Send to Back.

Through repitition children can encode information in LTM. I learned a lot and realized learning is lifelong!

Using mailmerge is a convient way of both parent and teacher keeping in constant contact.Information about grades, PTA meetins or any related school business can be communicated via email or post. Many parents complain about being unable to take time of from their busy schedule. This saves time and money.

Ilove the internet. It is a virtual library at my fingertips.Communication is so simple, emails can be sent in seconds. In the classroom, it can be used to encourage introverts and to access information.I dont like though, the online predators and the ease of access to any kind of information[porn!]

Powerpoint. Very powerful and breaks the monotony of chalk and talk. I love the animation and transitions. Children, especially love the multisensory appeal and can see the linkages. Powerpoint can be misused if is not accompanied by discussions............. On a lighter note,ed tech has been quite informative and fun. Sir you are indeed a wonderful teacher, and I really enjoyed your classes.

this course has expanded my knowledge on the uses of technology in the education system. frankly prior to this experience i never phantom that technology can be such a valuable resourse to schools. what is even more interesting about the system is that can be adapted to suit the needs of each individual, at all level of the educational system. it is appealing and enables anyone to recieve and communicate information from anywhere in the world efficiently

The difference between grade book and statistical packages.Grade book can allow a teacher to create their class or subject files(a wizard is included to assist new users), edit a class roster, including ID, home-contact information and comments enter ,edit grades and attendance classify each grade according to type, e.g., test, quiz, homework and view and print students' records in many different and useful ways . Statistical packages can perform similar functions but are more mathematical in nature. For example if I want to perform task such as mean, median and mode using the marks of the children in my class I do this using this tool. Isnt technology a wonderful thing.

Learning about the 'power' of power point left me feeling very amazed by its capabilities and contents. I am now in a place where i appeal visually to any delivery on any topic in the classroom. This would help in captiviting students attention and encouraging them to also be creative to make presentations in class on specific topics.

i have always been hearing about microsoft powerpoint from my friends and nephews. I always thought it was difficult, maybe because I did not know beyond basic technology. Now that i have been learning step by step, my lecturer, Mr. Birbal puts it across and simplifies everything about this topic. I am amazed at how exciting and how useful this microsoft powerpoint is.

I am now aware of all the benefits of the internet and how many programmes that are available to help me in my teaching profession. Not only can i motivate my students and have them wanting to do more studies, but I can also introduce more attractive methods of lesson delivery with the use of programmes such as simulations in the classroom.

now that i have learnt of creating furls, i can pass this information to my students in my future classrooms, making their workload, in terms of research alot easier. Now they can log on to a site and go directly to their furl with the websites saved for whichever type of information they are searching, instead of having to start all over every time they have research to do.

I was introduced to technology and what its functions are in the classroom. I was never the kind of person to spend a lot of time using the internet-usually when was necessary only. This educational technology course has changed my view and has been a great help to me thus far.

12:52 PM
Blogger Asha said...

the first part of our educational Technology project was based on Microsoft word, access and excel.Never before was I aware of all the uses that Microsoft word had- in particular, mail merge. Now with this very useful tool, i am able to send multiple letters with the same format, addressed to different persons. In my classroom, this truly would be a tool that technology has made available to me to ease my workload as a teacher.

12:56 PM
Blogger Asha said...

Based on my research on Problem Based Learning, the final part of my Educational Technology project, i was sensitized on many more software support tools that teachers can use to enhance their teaching strategy and to be able to track their students performance.
support tools such as desktop publisher where i can enhance my teaching materials- by creating flyers, brochures and further motivate my students by having them participate in online testing in programmes like student grading systems, where individual evaluations are generated and posted so that student's performance can be viewed even by their parents

In this everchanging world, we live, technology is ever-present and ever-changing,as teachers, we are to "keep up" with the times to portray "withitness" to be able to identify with our students. I believe that Educational Technology is a course that should be made mandatory for all persons pursuing a degree in the teaching profession.
